Buying a Network Card

Buying a New Network Card?

Introduction
As more and more people have two PC's at home, the popularity of networking them together is growing at a fast rate. To set up your own home network you will need the following items:

  • 1 network card per computer
  • Cabling to connect the network cards
  • Possibly a hub if you wish to connect multiple computers using high-speed 100 Mbit cable

There are two networking standards - RJ45 and BNC. BNC is older and the computers are connected in sequence using the cable - this is cheap and simple for networks of 4 or less computers. For more than this you will want to select the newer RJ45 type cables/connectors. These require you to purchase a hub that you connect all the computers to with telephone-wire-esque cables. This system supports the fast 100Mbit speeds as opposed to just 10Mbit for the BNC cables.
