Modular Technology Super Highway 56K/V90 USB Modem This modem also had the same software as the external and PCI modems, which is Galaxy II. Therefore all functionality of this USB modem was as per the other Modular Technology offerings. So nothing new there then! Some necessary additional options would be a sound card, speakers and microphone, without which it will be impossible to record outgoing messages and listen to incoming voice messages. Also because the USB modem has no external lights or internal speaker it is completely silent whilst dialing out or handshaking with another modem of fax machine. We found this to be very disconcerting at first as like most of you we would expect to hear something or at least see some flashing lights ensuring us something is actually happening. We found ourselves nearly aborting the connection attempt several times as it seemed to take a very long time to connect. This was probably not the case but those lights and the handshaking noises must take one's mind off how long it's actually taking to connect. The average tested connection speeds were comparable to both the PCI and external Modular Technology modems at 46,666 bps. The USB modem does not need a power adapter as it takes it's power via the USB port. A second cable connects the tiny box of tricks to the telephone socket. In general the Galaxy software performs well but I feel it could be made to be a little easier to install and setup. Some confusion arose as to whether one could have fax and voice calls answered automatically as we only seemed to be able to get one option answering at a time.
