This modem is an external device that can act as an offline answerphone and fax recorder utilising a 4MB Smart Memory card. Leave the modem on and your PC off when your out and the modem will retain faxes and answerphone messages to the smart memory. On your return power up the PC and save the messages for playback and faxes for viewing or printing.

Very smart, very useful. 8MB and 16MB smart cards are also available to hold even more messages.

The modem is supplied with an inbuilt speaker and an external microphone. All the necessary cables, a 4MB smart memory card, a CompuServe CD, Application CD and power adapter. Plus a very useful remote control unit for dialing and switching between fax and voice modes.

On unpacking the modem insert the smart card, connect top the PC and switch on. The modem is recognised straight away and the drivers loaded without any problems.

A Netscape disk supplied with the package for a free Internet connection asked us for several technical questions, such as POP3 server names etc. I feel this would be very daunting to the first time user. We abandoned this and used our own Netscape CD and with no fuss gained our connection to the Internet.

After installing the software a monitor is loaded on each startup of the PC. This toolbar/monitor stopped us connecting to the Internet but once removed all was ok. Unfortunately we could not get hold of tech. Support to help us as we were working rather late that night. Nothing new in that!

Average connection speed achieved was 48,000 bps which is good considering the speeds we'd been getting using the same phone line with the other modems. The chances are you'd get an even better connection speed, although you may still get less...

The quality of sound via the modem and its recorded messages on the smartcard was very clear. All in all the software was very easy to install and use. Out of the five modems the Olitec is the most expensive at £85.00 plus VAT. If the other modem manufacturers had an opportunity to manufacture a modem with this price point what might they have submitted? Well in this instance we won't know, as price was not a barrier in our request for modems. The Olitec model came tops for content, ease of use and features, but what impressed us most in our labs was the technical content and for this aspect the Olitec strolls away with our Excellence award.
