AMD Athlon 1GHz (1000MHz) 'Thunderbird' Processor

Introduction
Not so long ago, we published a comprehensive overview for the Athlon Thunderbird and analysed the differences between the old generation Athlon and the new 'Thunderbird' processors. (Click here to read the overview). The AMD Thunderbird processor we received was the popular 1GHz (1000MHz) - Socket A (PGA) form factor, with the MSI-K7T (MS-6330) - VIA KT133 chipset based Motherboard. As you will notice we have retained all the components that we used for the AMD Duron test except for the Processor, thereby providing an equal balance should you wish to compare.

As we write there are rumours of Gateway experiencing problems with the Athlon 1GHz processors, at the time of publication Gateway were not available for comment, the reported problems are sketchy. We are of the opinion that incompatibility issues regarding processors are not easy to pinpoint unless other components relating to a particular system meet specifications as laid down by processor manufacturers. If we hear any further news relating to the 1GHz or any other processor related issues, we shall endeavour to release these to our readers as soon as possible.

AMD's stronghold for the global desktop processor market was completed once the Duron was launched. Thereby, completing the missing 'desktop entry' level puzzle, and consequently signalling the end of the Intel Celeron range. Intel never really got it right with the Celeron, despite having had a massive head start. AMD on the other hand, clearly learnt how not to do it at the expense of Intel.
