This MAG monitor is more in line with the main players here, being based around the flat screen. The 796FD has an aperture grille at 0.24mm although it is the maximum resolution of 1600x1200@ 75Hz which is even more impressive, although those sort of resolutions are all but unusable on a 17" monitor. It does go to show the quality of the tube that those kind of displays are obtainable though.

The 796FD flew though our tests, only failing on the Transient Response and the Horizontal Wedge resolution which is very impressive indeed. You have to remember that quite a few of these tests would never actually be noticeable in everyday use, they are just to put the monitor through its paces.

The monitor itself is quite attractive and very much at the lighter end of the scale weight wise in addition to being one of the smallest. 17" monitors are always going to have a relatively large footprint but you should be able to squeeze the 796FD onto pretty much any desk and look quite at home on it.

Unfortunately this was another one that the prices were unavailable for as we went to publish the site. You should find that the 796FD should be very competitive and we had another value award out ready and waiting, but unfortunately it was not to be.
